Writing Reflection

Ideas And Content

With my writing I feel that in terms of applying my content and ideas into my work I am reasonable strong. Especially when it comes down to work that is based not only on the authors intentions of his/hers writing but of our different perception of the authors text. I have evidence of this in my Julius Caesar essay in which I always question Brutus’s reasons for why the end did or didn’t justify the means (Caesars Assassination). However my weakness in my content and ideas is that I occasionally become slightly too inventive or perhaps not realistic or believable, yet this can be countered with myself narrowing my work down so that I can attempt and try to get rid of any unreasonable sentences or ideas and content.

Organization

When I am doing and or finished a piece of writing I generally want to go over and review my work. This is so I feel more comfortable with what I have written and so I can improve or add/delete any work that isn’t necessary or good quality. This can also be seen in my Julius Caesar Essay with my correct grammar and spelling as well as unique literally techniques. I believe that I could improve my writings organization if I plan more ahead. In both my essays I think I could of done better if I had gathered more resources first then did the writing for the Essay.

Personal Growth

There were definitely differences between both my pieces of writing in my Alchemist I had more time to improve and change my piece of writing due to the time I had to do it. With the Julius Caesar we only had 45 minutes so I used a more vague but also quick approach to try to cover all my opinions, thoughts and ideas into the essay.

SLR Reflection

I think the SLR that best suits my writing is thinking creatively. This is because I usually/generally like to add a new or different unique way of looking at a perception. I use many different SLR’s in my writing its just that I feel this SLR establishes my ability to change perception.

IMovie: Sudan Six Word Memoir/ Collage

Think Creatively
My collage shows numerous aspects of creative thinking and uniqueness. Some of the creative ideas within my collage are the various different types of images displayed from: pictures of Sudan, Soldiers under Sudans conflict, the Dinka people in the middle of the civil war and images of Peter (showing the plight of the Lost Boys also when they went to America). I used news paper not only to fill up the background of my collage but also to show that this issue (the war in Sudan and the problems concerning the lost Boys) is very serious and worthy to be in the news paper.

Reason Critically
The images I chose very clearly show my understanding of the Lost Boys troubles and situation. Many of my images are infant Dinka people all of which do not look happy but scared, worried and starved. I also added a photo near the top left of Peter the Lost Boy in America demonstrating understanding of his desire to get a more further/complete education while also discovering a new country, race of people and cultural identity. While he is also trying to fit in he has to maintain enough money to rent a house, pay school fees, buy food and much more, with only a poor income job.

Communicate Effectively
My collage creates awareness for the lost boys plight by its startling images and short yet affective and powerful sentences. My short descriptions help the collages audience undertand more background information if they are new to the crisis in Sudan and Darfur, affecting the Dinka people. A more vague but more developed way to describe the Lost Boys harsh changes are my six word memoir.

Live Ethically
My collage might/could make its audience/readers evoke large amounts of empathy because of their dreadful situation which my collage expresses. My brief sentences on my collage inform my audience with what is happening in Sudan which would evoke sympathy and empathy towards the Dinka people for now being internally displaced people. My images support my text with visual enhancement of their troubles. My six word memoir would use its powerful descriptive words to put empathy into the collages readers to make them feel emotion towards Sudan.

Brutus: Does The Ends Justify The Means

“It must be by his death; and for my part I know no personal cause to spurn at him” (act 2 scene 1 lines: 10-12), this quotation by Brutus, in the play piece: Julius Caesar, clearly tells us about Brutus’s self conflict to kill Caesar. Brutus, throughout the play: Julius Caesar, has always had sparks of his characterization showing his devotion for Rome and his own self-honor. These two traits motivated him to feel the need to publically assassinate Julius Caesar before he could rule Rome and possible destroy it.

Brutus is always aware of the needs/requirements of Rome and its protection in this way Brutus is devoted. When Caesar was on the verge of becoming ruler of Rome, he felt that if Caesar did become king his nature would change and this would lead him to abusing his power as king of Rome. Brutus did love Caesar as a great friend but was more scared of what Caesar would do to Rome. This pushed him and provoked him to join the Conspirators (with some manipulation from Cassius), who together publically assassinated Caesar. After Brutus had just talked to Cassius about how they both don’t want Caesar as a king, Brutus go’s home to his orchards and says a soliloquy. Brutus plainly shows us that he was terribly scared of what would happen to Rome if Caesar became King and how he might change, from this from this quote: “But for the general. He would be crowne’d: How that might change his nature, there’s the question. It is the bright day that brings forth the adder, and that craves wary walking. Crown him? – That? And then I grant we put a sting in him, that at his will he may do danger with. Th’ abuse of greatness is when it disjoins Remorse from power; and to speak truth of Caesar, I have not known when his affections sway’d”(act 2 scene 1 line 12-20). This shows Brutus’s driving force to kill Caesar because his nature might change and he will abuse his power/greatness. Brutus also tells us about how he loves Caesar as well but how he felt that Rome was of more importance in his heart. Following the assassination of Julius Caesar Brutus tells the people of Rome why he felt the urge to kill Caesar. This quote demonstrates this: “ Caesar, this is my answer: Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more. Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?” (act 3 scene 2 lines 20-23). This quote describes how Brutus loved Caesar but Brutus had more love for Rome, yet it also shows further signs of Brutus believing Caesars nature to change if he became king. Brutus felt that by killing Caesar he was saving Rome, this made him kill Caesar out of fear of losing Rome.

Brutus is one of the noblest characters in the whole play yet his self-honor was both a positive trait and his downfall. Brutus’s ancestors were several of the noble people who droved the bad kings from Rome, so for this reason Brutus feels that he must maintain a sense of pride and honor for himself and Rome. Brutus, because of his honor he also (like his devotion) found the need to assassinate Caesar. Honor was also what killed him; he took his own life because he had lost the battle against Antony and Octavius. When Cassius is trying to make Brutus join the conspirators Brutus explains to the audience/reader his feelings about honor: “Till then, my noble friend, chew upon this: Brutus had rather be a villager Than to repute himself a son of Rome under these hard conditions as this time Is like to lay upon us.”(act 1 scene 2 line 169- 173). This tells us that Brutus feels no honor in having Caesar rule Rome or about to rule Rome. Brutus’s downfall unfortunately was also caused because of his honor. When Brutus has lost the battle against Antony and Octavius he feels that he must commit suicide to keep some of his honor instead of being killed by Antony and Octavius (although they secretly respected Brutus greatly and wouldn’t kill him) this quote shows us this: “Farewell, good Strato. Caesar, now be still; I kill’d thee with half so good a will (Brutus kills himself)”(final act final scene Brutus’s last lines). Brutus had so many honors for both himself and for Rome that he would go o any length to maintain it, which caused him to kill Caesar and himself.

Brutus was in a lot of self-conflict throughout this play and it was the choice to kill Caesar or not that was the conflict. Brutus was strongly powered by Honor and Devotion, which were the reasons for why he must kill Caesar. These motivators made Brutus kill Caesar and Brutus kill himself at the battle of Philippi. I believe that the end didn’t justify the means because after Brutus is killed Octavius becomes King Of Rome so it didn’t really have much point to kill Caesar ( although we know Brutus felt that his personality might change against the commoners of Rome if he became king) so possible Octavius was a much better king than Caesar would of been. I also think Brutus and the conspirators were slightly reckless, they killed Caesar before he was king (and before they knew for sure his personality would change). I would say that the conspirator’s goal was not noble because they killed Caesar out of envy and jealousy. While I think Brutus’s goal was very noble because he sacrificed everything for his honor and the safety/glory of Rome.

Not Born In The USA

Not Born In The USA

During the documentary the “Lost Boys”, the main character Peter has several difficulties adjusting from the reasonable simple life of a refugee to, a part time American citizen. Peter as a refugee from war in Sudan knew of very few comforts in his life apart from his friends, family and community in Africa. Peter changes throughout the film while also trying to fit into his new role in this modern society in America. Peter lived a basic style of life in his Dinka refugee camp, but when he was introduced to new things such as different forms of: transportation, foods, education and electrical powered items/objects he was very new to them. Ever since Peter boarded a plane with several other Dinka friends he was surrounded by a world that he would have to fit in. You could see clearly that they had not known of many of the western foods because of the way that they were eating the butter raw without anything with it. After several months in this new environment he slowly started to assimilate into the new community in Houston. Progressively his job was promoted and he could enjoy the luxuries of having a car and a small house, which he paid for. However Peter felt that his life was going nowhere in Houston, Texas so he decided to move up North to Kansas to start a new way of life. This included the ability for him to get a more further education. A right few of his fellow Dinka people in the states didn’t have (including Santino) because many of them were not born in hospitals meaning they had no idea of their exact age. According to the documentaries’ perspective Peter seamed to be fitting into his new school and its education. Peter felt that he could connect to others through the sport of Basketball, which he did have some experience with in the refugee camp in Africa. Yet we do see a few scenes in the film of derogatory racism against the Dinka people and Peter in his recent schooling program. The people of Sudan from the Dinka tribe were refugees intent on creating a new life in America, where they thought they could escape all the war and violence of their life in Africa. Peter changed when he went to America he had a more developed education that he could spread to his people in the refugee camp and a new take on the world around him.
